1. What is an EMT?

​

An EMT, or Emergency Medical Technician, is a healthcare professional trained to provide immediate medical care to individuals in emergencies. They are often the first responders to accidents, medical emergencies, and other critical incidents.

 

2. What are the different levels of EMTs?

 

There are three main levels of Prehospital providers working ambulance in the United States:

  • EMT (What used to be called an EMT-Basic (EMT-B)

  • Advanced EMT (AEMT)

  • Paramedic

 

3. How do I become an EMT?

 

To become an EMT, you need to complete an approved EMT training program. After completing the program, you must pass a certification exam.


 

4. What does EMT training entail?

 

EMT training includes classroom instruction (didactic) and hands-on clinical experience. You will learn about anatomy, physiology, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma care, emergency childbirth, and how to respond to medical and traumatic emergencies. Skills such as CPR, and wound care are also taught.

 

5. How long does EMT training take?

 

EMT programs take 170 hours to complete. 

 

6. What is your pass rate on the NREMT exam?

Our current pass rate on the NREMT exam for first time test takers ranges between 94 and 97%. 

 

7. What are the prerequisites for EMT training?

 

You need to be at least 18 years old (by graduation) and have a BLS CPR certification.

 

8. Is there a certification exam for EMTs?

 

Yes, after completing your EMT training, you must pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification exam to become a certified EMT.

 

9. Can I work as an EMT with just the basic certification?

 

Yes, EMT-Basics can work in various settings, including ambulances, hospitals, and fire departments. 

 

10. What is the scope of practice for EMTs?

 

EMTs are trained to assess and manage a wide range of medical and traumatic emergencies. The scope of practice includes administering basic life support, trauma care, treating and transporting patients with medical emergencies, working with Advanced Life Support providers (Paramedics) and other providers.

 

11. How often do EMTs need to renew their certification?

 

EMTs need to renew every 2 years. This involves completing continuing education, renewing your “state skills exam,” and renewing your CPR certification.

 

12. Can I become a paramedic after becoming an EMT?

 

Yes, you can pursue paramedic training after becoming an EMT and in fact, most. Paramedic training programs require it. Paramedic training is more advanced but it  builds upon the skills and knowledge gained as an EMT.

 

13. Are there career opportunities for EMTs beyond emergency response?

 

Yes, EMTs can pursue careers in various healthcare settings, including emergency departments, (ER Tech), become a Paramedic, nursing, Physicians Assistant, Firefighter, and Law Enforcement. Some also choose to pursue careers in public health.

 

14. What are the physical and emotional demands of being an EMT?

 

EMTs often work in high-stress environments and may encounter traumatic situations. Being dedicated to providing excellent care, being physically healthy and having emotional resilience helps EMT’s handle the demands of the job.
